Llandudno residents are unknowingly contributing to beach pollution, a hidden issue that has been a bone of contention for years. The North Shore coastline's decline in bathing water quality is a result of drainage misconnections, where wastewater from toilets, sinks, washing machines, and dishwashers is mistakenly connected to surface water drains instead of the foul sewer.
This problem has been particularly prevalent in the Craig y Don area, leading to a drop in the beach's classification from Good to Sufficient in 2023. Despite a recovery to Good in 2025, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is determined to further improve water quality, aiming for an Excellent classification.
The issue is not just about meeting standards but also about protecting the beach, which is valued by the community, supports marine life, and is vital to the local economy. NRW's efforts include CCTV surveys of the drainage network, identifying misconnections, and conducting hands-on inspections of homes and businesses.
So far, around 300 properties out of 986 have been inspected, with 14% showing issues such as misconnected plumbing, leaking sewer pipes, or blockages. These problems can allow pollution to reach the outfall and ultimately the sea.
NRW emphasizes the importance of local residents' support, as many misconnections are unintentional and may date back many years. Property owners are often unaware of the problem, making it crucial to engage with the community for effective solutions.
The spokesperson added, "Improving water quality here isn't just about meeting standards; it's about protecting a beach that's valued by the community, supports marine life, enjoyed by visitors, and vital to the local economy."
To address this issue, NRW encourages residents to ensure that new appliances and plumbing are correctly installed, preventing future misconnections. This small step can have a significant impact on protecting the coastline, highlighting the importance of individual actions in maintaining water quality.
